In 1854 the settlement of Brushy Creek was named Round Rock in honor of a round rock which marked a low-water crossing for wagons, horses and cattle. After the Civil War, Jesse Chisholm began to move cattle from South Texas through Round Rock. The route he established, which crossed Brushy Creek here, became the Chisholm Trail. The gunfight and subsequent capture of American train robber Sam Bass happened here in 1878. Round Rock is home to Dell computer and minor league baseball team Round Rock Express, which is owned by Nolan Ryan.
